The Aadhar Card today, is one of the most prominent national identity cards in India. Aadhar Card is now vital “must have” identity for every Indian with various benefits linked to it. The card is a unique 12 digit identity number that serves both as an identification and residential proof. One can get Aadhar Card download by Name and Date of Birth, Enrollment Number, Virtual ID, and with an Aadhar Number.  This article is aimed at showcasing the different methods to download Aadhar Card Online.

A person is eligible to download his/her Aadhar Card online once your enrollment process is done. There is no need to wait for receiving an Aadhar Card via post or mail.

Aadhar Card Download by Name and Date of Birth:

It is essential for you to at least have the Aadhar Number (UID) or the EID to download your Aadhar Card online. In case you don’t have any of those, there is a simple method to retrieve them.

  • Visit resident.uidai.gov.in/find-uid-eid and fill in the details which include your
    • Full Name
    • E-Mail
    • Mobile Number and
    • Security Code
  • Upon filling the details, click on Send OTP. You will now either receive a 6 digit OTP on either your registered phone number or registered mail ID.
  • On receiving the OTP, fill the unique 6 digit code in the Enter OTP section. 
  • Once the details are filled, you will now receive either your Aadhar Number or Enrollment ID on the registered phone/mail ID depending on your choice/preference.

Alternate Methods to download Aadhar Card Online:

The process of downloading an Aadhar Card online is quite simple. You can follow either one of the methods to download your Aadhar Card online. The different methods include

  • Aadhar Number
  • Virtual Identity Number (or)
  • Enrollment ID (EID)

Aadhar Card Download by Aadhar Number:

This method enables you to download Aadhar Card using your Aadhar Number. The procedure to download Aadhar Card using Aadhar number are stated below.

  • Visit E-Aadhar website.
  • Select I have Aadhar optioni.e. click on Aadhar option out fo the three options available. (This option is good only if you are aware of your Aadhar number)
  •  Enter the details which include
    • Your Aadhar Number
    • Full Name (Please make sure you type the name with the same spelling and format as registered in your Aadhar)
    • Pin Code (Your residential area)
    • Security Code (You have the option of bringing out a different Captcha code if you are unclear with the present one. Please click ‘Try another option’ present beside the ‘Enter Security Code’ section)
  • Upon filling the details, you will see an option saying “Do you have TOTP“. You can generate TOTP through an m-Aadhar app. In case you have access to an m-Aadhar app and wish to use TOTP, then click on the checkbox.
  • On the contrary, please click on the Request OTP section.(When you don’t have an m-Aadhar app and do not wish to use TOTP)
  • Once you click, a 6 digit One Time Password is sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhar.Enter the OTP in Enter OTP section.
  • Now, click on Download Aadhar button to download your E-Aadhar.
  • To open downloaded  Aadhar card PDF file, you will be required to type in a password. The procedure to generate and type password is explained below.

Aadhar Card Download by Enrollment Number (EID):

This procedure is useful in cases where a user does not have access to his/her Aadhar number or UID. This method allows you to download Aadhar Card even in times when you are not in possession of your Aadhar number. You can use your Enrollment Number (EID) to download the Aadhar Card. The enrollment ID is usually found on the acknowledgment slip you receive after completing the enrollment procedure for an Aadhar Card at an Aadhar Card Center. The slip contains important information related to your EID and the time stamp.

“How to find Enrollment ID and Time Stamp:

The Enrollment ID and the Time Stamp are 14 digit values present at the top towards left end and right end respectively. They are right below the ‘Acknowledgement/Resident copy’ heading.” 

Steps to download Aadhar Card using EID:
  • Visit E-Aadhar website

  • Type the obtained OTP in the Enter OTP section and click Download Aadhar button to download the Aadhar Card.
  • To open you downloaded the PDF file, you will be required to type in a password. The procedure to type your password is explained below.

Your downloaded Aadhar Card is in PDF format. It is advisable to open it in Adobe Reader or any PDF document supported software. Once you download your Aadhar Card, you can either take a print out or store it on your phone for future use. Procedure to generate password is given below.

Steps to download your Aadhar Card by Virtual Identity Number (VID):

Virtual ID is a new technique introduced by UIDAI to ensure security against data breach. This system has been devised to avoid tensions created due to data breaches and misuse of Aadhar Card information.

The Aadhar VID is a 16 digit temporary number. You have the facility of generating, retrieving or revoking the VID via uidai.gov.in. You can use VID instead of an Aadhar number whenever KYC or authentication services are performed. In addition, the Government of India plans on making the virtual id compulsory for all authentications from 1st June 2018.

How to generate Virtual Identity Number (VID):

You can follow the steps mentioned below for generating VID-

  • Visit uidai.gov.in and click on Virtual ID (VID) generator under the Aadhar Services column (or) directly visit VIDgeneration
    • Fill in the details which include
      • Your Aadhar Number
      • Security Code
    • Upon filling the details, click on Send OTP on which you will receive a 6-digit verification code on your registered mobile number/mail ID. Input this OTP at the Enter OTP section.
    • Once the OPT is verified, you have two options of either
      • Generating VID
      • Retrieving VID
    • Click on Generate VID. You will receive a 14 digit VID on your registered mobile number which will be active for the next 30 minutes.
Steps to download Aadhar Card using VID.
  • Open the UIDAI page and select VID option.
  • Enter the details which include
    • Your generated VID number
    • Full Name (Please make sure you type the name as registered in your Aadhar)
    • Pin Code (Area you reside(live) in)
    • Security Code
  • Upon filling the details, you will see an option saying “Do you have TOTP“. You can generate TOTP through an m-Aadhar app. If you have an m-Aadhar app and wish to use TOTP, then click on the checkbox.
  • Alternatively, click on Request OTP section. Upon selecting this option, you will receive a 6 digit code on the registered mobile number/mail ID. Enter the received code in Enter OTP section and click Download Aadhar.
  • You need a password to open your E-Aadhar file.

Your downloaded Aadhar Card is a PDF. It is advisable to open it in Adobe Reader or any PDF document supported software. Once you download your Aadhar Card, you can either take a print out or store it on your phone for future use.

Process for the Opening Aadhar Card PDF:

The PDF E-Aadhar file is password protected. You need to type in a password to open your E-Aadhar card. Also, the password consists of 8 characters. Moreover, the 8 character password is a combination of the first four letters of your name written in CAPITAL letters (Name as mentioned in the Aadhaar card) and your Year of Birth (in YYYY format).

  • Example 1: Your name is KIRAN USHA
    Your Year of Birth is 1989 
    Then your E-Aadhaar password is KIRA1989
  • Example 2: Your name is D.L. Rao 
    Your Year of Birth is 1989 
    Then your E-Aadhaar password is D.L.1989 (‘.’ is a character making R.M. 4 different letters)
  • Example 3: Your name is UMA
    Your year of birth is 1970
    Then your E-Aadhar password is UMA1970
  • Example 4: Your name is Arjun Patel
    Your year of birth is 1967
    Then your E-Aadhar password is ARJU1967

Your downloaded Aadhar Card is a PDF. It is advisable to open it in Adobe Reader or any PDF document supported software. Once you download your Aadhar Card, you can either take a print out or store it on your phone for future use.
